Excelsior, August, 1917

The Story

I grew up in the Lake Minnetonka area in the late 1940's and 1950's on Fox Street, a gravel road of only two or so miles long. Wayzata was "the Village"with a movie theater and two drugstores;...Crystal Bay was still a town, albeit a small one, with Hill School, two stores and a lumber yard; Long Lake still boasted "The Buckhorn" where a young boy could see civil war guns and "jackalopes" hung on the walls...and Emma's Cafe...our favorite place for pop and candy. Excelsior, far away on the other side of the Lake, was the home of the amusement park. Many of the area roads were still just gravel and subject to becoming impassable in the spring.

A time before television, before computers and video games, it was a time of listening to Gene Autry, Red Rider and Roy Rogers on the radio, reading great adventure stories, (sometimes under the covers by flashlight), and...most of all...getting outside as quickly as you could to explore and enjoy the world around you
